On June 3, 1965, NASA's Ed White became the first American to walk in space. White left the security of his spaceship Gemini 4 equipped with a spacesuit, a fastener, and a small gas gun to maneuver. This was only released a few months after the first release of the Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov on 18 March 1965.

White floated near the ship for about twenty-three minutes. He hesitated to finish his outing in a spacesuit because the experience was so exciting. They must have sent him back into the spaceship. White came home and said, “I'm coming back...and this is the saddest moment of my life.”

There was a problem with the hatch system, which made it difficult for White to open and lock again. This posed a threat to the life of James McDivitt, pilot of White and Command. But they ended up making White a part of it.
